The Other May Day

Around the world, May Day (or Workers' Day) often brings to mind communist protests and swat-like teams (swarms!) of police armed with tear gas. My friend, Frank Payne, has some wonderful photos of that May Day here.

But today, in New Haven, is the other May Day. It's the Foote May Day, when all the children perform traditional dances outside in pastel clothes while their parents and peers watch with joy. It culminates, of course, with the third grade's dance around the Maypoles.

It's enchanting to watch, and today there's perfect weather. Great!
